Adventurous couples: going further, safely
Consent, safe words, aftercare and the bondage-lite kit to start with: how adventurous couples go further while keeping it safe and kind. 18+.
Going further is less about the kit and more about trust. Couples who explore kink or BDSM happily tend to have the same habits: they talk first, agree limits, use a safe word and look after each other afterwards. This guide covers those habits, then the bondage-lite kit to start with.
Prices are as listed by the retailers on 8 October 2026; where we haven’t checked a price, we say so. Features come from each retailer’s listing.

Consent first, every time
Consent is an enthusiastic, ongoing yes from both of you, and either of you can take it back at any moment. Talk before you play, not in the middle of it. Agree what’s on the menu, what’s a maybe and what’s a hard no (your limits), and revisit the list whenever something changes. A good rule: if you’re not sure, stop and ask.
Safe words and signals
A safe word should be unmistakable: a word you’d never say by accident. Many couples use a traffic-light system:
- Green: all good, carry on.
- Amber: slow down or check in.
- Red: stop now, no questions asked.
If speaking might be difficult, agree a signal too, such as three taps or dropping a small object. Respect it instantly, every time.
Bondage-lite kit to start with
Choose soft, adjustable pieces that come off quickly. Restraints and a blindfold make up most first kits; sensation play with a feather or tickler adds contrast. The basics still apply: nothing around the neck, ties loose enough for two fingers, and never leave a restrained partner alone. Ready to explore bondage further? Our bondage hub has more.

Aftercare: the part that makes it work
Aftercare is how you look after each other once play ends. It can be as simple as a blanket, a glass of water, a cuddle and a few kind words. What is aftercare?
How you look after each other once play ends: a blanket, water, closeness or a little space, and a chat the next day about what you loved and what you’d change.
What bondage kit should adventurous beginners buy?
Soft, adjustable pieces that come off quickly: a blindfold and silk or satin ties. Lovehoney’s Sensation Play kit and So Divine’s mulberry silk restraints (£32) are good starting points.
