Conversation starters for couples: desires, boundaries and trying new things
Warm, practical prompts for talking about desires, boundaries and trying new things, plus a few lines for when it feels awkward. 18+.
The best sex lives aren’t the most adventurous; they’re the ones where both people feel able to say what they want. These prompts are warm, practical openers for talking about desires, boundaries and trying new things, without it feeling like a meeting.
How to use them
Choose one or two, not the whole list. Take turns answering, and either of you can pass on any question. Listen more than you plan your answer, and say thank you; it’s brave to be honest.
Good moments: a walk, a long drive, cooking together, a lazy Sunday morning.
Less good: straight after sex that didn’t go to plan, mid-argument, or when one of you is tired.
Warm-ups: easy and affectionate
Start with what’s already good. It makes everything after feel safer.
- What’s a moment with me you still think about?
- When do you feel most wanted by me?
- What’s something small I do that you love?
- What’s your favourite way to be touched when we’re not having sex?
- Which of our dates would you happily repeat?
Desires: what you’d love more of
Lead with curiosity, not critique. “More of” lands better than “less of”.
- Is there anything you’d like more of, in or out of the bedroom?
- What makes you feel most in the mood?
- Is there a fantasy you’d like to talk about, even if we never act on it?
- Morning, evening or spontaneous: what’s your favourite?
- What would a perfect night in look like for you?
Boundaries: what feels right
Boundaries aren’t rejection; they’re instructions for how to make each other feel safe. See limits and consent in the glossary.
- Is there anything you’d rather we didn’t do, or do less often?
- How do you like me to check in with you during sex?
- What’s a yes, a maybe and a no for you right now?
- How can I tell you’d like to slow down or stop?
- Is there anything you said yes to before that you’d like to rethink?
Trying new things
Make it a menu you build together, not a list of demands. Agree that either of you can change your mind.
- Is there something you’ve been curious about but haven’t mentioned?
- Would you like to choose a toy together? What would you look for?
- What would make trying something new feel easy for you?
- Would you rather plan it or be surprised (within what we’ve agreed)?
- What would you like to try first: massage, a toy, a blindfold or a game?
Afterwards: checking in
A two-minute chat the next day keeps the good things coming and stops small worries growing.
- What was your favourite part?
- Was there anything you’d change next time?
- Did anything feel uncomfortable, even a little?
- Would you like to do that again?
- How did you feel afterwards: close, energised, sleepy?
When it feels awkward
It will, a little, and that’s fine. Some lines that help:
- “This feels a bit awkward to say, but I’d like to try…”
- “No pressure at all; I’d just love to know what you think.”
- “Can we keep talking about this another time?”
- “Thank you for telling me.”

Talking questions
How do I start a conversation about sex with my partner?
Choose a relaxed moment away from the bedroom, start with something you love about your sex life, then ask an open question such as “Is there anything you’d like more of?” Let either of you pass.
How do we talk about boundaries without killing the mood?
Have the conversation before, not during. Try sorting ideas into yes, maybe and no, and agree how you’ll check in, such as a simple “still good?”.
What if my partner says no?
Thank them for being honest and let it go without pressure. A no to one idea is useful information, and many couples find plenty of other things they both enjoy.
Talking is foreplay too. Ready to try something? Start with Exploring together. 18+ only.
