Lingerie fit 101: how lingerie should fit and feel

Band, cups, straps and knickers: simple signs that something fits, and what to try when it doesn’t.

Lingerie should feel good on, not just look good in the photo. These are the simple signs of a good fit, whatever your size or shape.

Bra fit: the quick checks

  • The band does most of the support. It should sit level all the way round and feel firm but comfortable on the loosest hook when new, so you can tighten it as it stretches.
  • The cups should be smooth, with no gaping at the top and no spilling over the edge.
  • The centre front on an underwired bra should usually lie flat against your chest.
  • The straps should stay put without digging in. If they dig, the band is often too loose.

Sizes vary between brands, so a size you wear in one shop may not fit in another.

Which style for which outfit

Knickers and bodies

  • Waistbands and leg edges should lie flat without cutting in.
  • A body or teddy should be long enough in the torso that it doesn’t pull at the shoulders or the gusset.
  • Lace with some stretch is usually more forgiving than rigid lace or satin.

Buying online

  • Use each retailer’s own size guide and measure with a soft tape.
  • Check the returns policy. Many retailers only accept knickers back unworn with the hygiene strip in place, so check before you order.
  • Read reviews for “runs small” or “runs large” comments.
