How to clean and store sex toys
A simple routine for washing, drying, charging and storing toys, plus what to do if you share them.
Looking after a toy keeps it safe to use and makes it last. It takes about two minutes.
Cleaning after every use
NHS sexual health services advise cleaning each toy after every use and checking the packaging for the maker’s cleaning instructions, because bacteria, viruses and other particles can stay on sex toys after use.
- Check whether it is waterproof or only splash-proof before it goes near the tap.
- Wash with warm water and mild, unscented soap, or a dedicated toy cleaner.
- Rinse well, then pat dry with a clean, lint-free cloth and let it air-dry fully.
- Follow the maker’s instructions for anything extra. Some non-porous materials can be boiled, but many toys with motors cannot.
If you share toys
Sharing sex toys can pass on sexually transmitted infections. NHS advice is to avoid sharing where possible, or to wash toys and cover them with a new condom for each person, and to change the condom when switching between the vagina and anus. If you have a new partner, it is a good idea to get tested for STIs; a sexual health clinic can help.
Storing toys
- Store toys clean and completely dry.
- Keep them in their own pouch or a clean, breathable bag, so toys are not rubbing against each other.
- Keep them away from direct heat and sunlight.
- Travel lock on? Many rechargeable toys have one: useful in a suitcase.
Batteries, charging and wear
- Charge with the cable the toy came with.
- Remove disposable batteries before storing a toy for a long time.
- Replace a toy if the surface is cracked, sticky or torn, because it can no longer be cleaned properly.
